Raila, Ida mourn death of ex-Uganda presidential candidate Aggrey Awori

Aggrey was the brother of former Vice-president Moody Awori.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his wife Ida have mourned the death of former Uganda Presidential candidate and brother to former Vice-President Moody Awori.

In a statement, the ODM leader described Awori as a true manifestation of the East African Integration and Pan Africanism.

"We join the Awori family and people from all around the region in giving thanks for Aggrey's remarkable life of service particularly to Kenya and Uganda," Raila said.

He stated that Aggrey served Kenya and Uganda in his youth including representing Uganda in the 1960 Olympic and later on came back to begin the School of Journalism at the University of Nairobi.

 The former Prime Minister noted the close relationship their families have had that began with their fathers, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Jeremiah Musungu Awori.

"At the University of Nairobi, he was an avid debater on issues of the day in Kenya and Uganda," Raila said.

He added, "I enjoyed every opportunity I had to visit him through the years and will always be deeply grateful for the kindness and inspiration he offered."

The former Uganda minister presidential candidate died on Monday afternoon aged 82.

His death was confirmed by Awori's close friend, Peter Oguttu.

Oguttu said the former ICT minister passed away at a private hospital in Naalya, Kampala.

"He has been sick for about a month and I have been in touch with him until today when his wife, Thelma told me that he has died," Oguttu said according to the Daily Monitor.

Awori who was voted the best legislator in the sixth Parliament, lost to  Stephen Mugeni Wasike in the subsequent election.

He retired from active politics before President Yoweri Museveni appointed him minister.
