Chief Inspector Ann Wanjiru Waiganjo, who collapsed and died on Saturday, after attending a colleague's exit party, had a share of controversies during her service.

Waiganjo, the head of DCI in Karen, arrived at the celebrations "strong and happy," according to one of her colleagues.

She was not seen drinking any alcohol.

The event was held at restaurant in Upper Hill, Nairobi, in honour of Henry Kiambata, a senior superintendent of police who was in charge of Makadara.

Waiganjo was confirmed dead on arrival at The Nairobi Hospital shortly after 6pm. She is said to have complained of sharp chest pain before falling unconscious.

The cause of her death was not immediately known but a postmortem examination has been scheduled.

Waiganjo shot to limelight in 2019 when she was accused of bigamy (being married to two men at the same time), which is illegal.

Her alleged first husband was David Murimi, a fellow police officer of a junior rank of inspector. The second was David Mbitu Muchi, a prison officer also of a junior rank.

It emerged that while their union with Murimi still held, she allegedly exchanged vows in a closely guarded ceremony with Muchi that was reportedly graced by top police officers.

In her defence, Waiganjo accused Murimi of beating her up, even producing an OB number to prove she had reported the matter to Kikuyu police station.

It emerged, though, that she declined to press charges against him, deciding to pursue divorce instead and the courts gave her the green light.

Murimi challenged Waiganjo to show evidence of his physical abuse

"Wanjiru had already contracted another marriage with David Mbitu Muchi on April 4, 2009 at Full Gospel Church, Njoro in Nakuru county. The aforesaid marriage had not been annulled or dissolved by the time Wanjiru was purportedly contracting the alleged civil marriage on September 18, 2012," court documents by Murimi in response to the divorce papers by Waiganjo said in part.

The marriages did not hold as Waiganjo divorced the two officers.

Her marriage with Muchi collapsed as they did not get a child.

Waiganjo had served various capacities before being posted to Karen. Colleagues described her as a hard working and dedicated officer.

She was the younger sister of Joshua Waiganjo, the man accused of impersonating the police. He was alleged to have passed out as a senior officer and sacked junior officers wherever he went.

She had been raising funds to help offset the hospital bills for her brother who has been in the ICU battling Covid-19 complications.
