A boda boda operator died at the KNH parking lot on Monday as health workers went on strike to demand a pay increase.

The man's friend said he was taken to the hospital by his wife and friends at 8am after vomiting blood.

"They begged to be helped but the striking doctors could not allow them in. They waited at the parking lot for 45 minutes until the guy died. After that, they begged again to see if he could be resuscitated but wapi (but in vain)... they then resolved to take him to City Mortuary," the unidentified friend said.

Health workers on Monday began their strike over a delayed salaries review. The workers carried placards as they protested in front of the hospital.

With no adherence to social distancing rules, the workers who were wearing masks and removing them intermittently sang as they demanded their pay.

"We will not accept the SRC to take us round and round," one worker said as they sang 'when the devil comes we will be ready'.

The death comes barely a month after uproar over an incident at Pumwani Maternity Hospital in which a woman was forced to give birth in the open air after a guard refused to give her access to the facility.
