Let's not go overboard to score against opponents - Kalonzo

Remarks by Ng'eno and Sudi were obscene, unwarranted, and totally uncalled for

In Summary
  • Utterances by the two elected leaders deserve condemnation from all right-thinking Kenyans.

I condemn, in the strongest terms possible, the recent utterances made by MPs Johana Ng'eno of Emurua Dikirr constituency and his Kapseret counterpart Oscar Sudi.

The utterances made on separate occasions appeared to have been tailored to cast aspersions on former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta, the mother of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

It is quite shocking that the two legislators, in their zeal to score political points, chose to go for the former First Lady's jugular and hurled unprintable epithets at her persona and character.

They did this fully aware of Mama Ngina’s inability to talk back or to give a measured response to the allegations levelled against her.

The utterances made by Ng’eno during a visit to Kiminnet in Transmara on Sunday and those by Sudi on Monday defending the Emurua Dikirr legislator following his arrest were obscene, unwarranted, and totally uncalled for.

They deserve condemnation from all right-thinking Kenyans.

Granted, we are in a heated political crucible, but this should not be an excuse for politicians, or Kenyans in general, to go overboard and exceed the boundaries of decency in an attempt to score points against perceived political opponents, whether real or imagined.

I, therefore, urge and call for restraint and temperance from Kenyans of all walks of life in our political discourse. Our opposing political stands must not be allowed to degenerate into an abyss of cacophonous barbarism.

Dragging President Kenyatta's mother into their differences with the Head of State and making vulgar comments about her was not only disrespectful but unnecessary.

No amount of anger justifies the use of vulgar words against elderly people and the President.

Let us learn to reason together as Kenyans even as we pursue our various political ambitions. We must not let raw emotions destroy the very fabric of our nation.

We should all endeavour to see to it that the voice of reason prevails.
