Yumbis police camp in Garissa county is under attack from suspected al Shabaab militants.

The post hosts Border Patrol Unit officers.

Reports on Wednesday night indicated loud explosions preceded heavy gunfire at the camp within Fafi subcounty.

Northeastern regional police boss Rono Bunei said the attack happened some minutes to 7pm.

"We are yet to establish what happened. Our officers are still on the ground," he told the Star on the phone, responding to whether there were injuries, loss of lives or weaponry.

He said that gunfire has ceased and attackers are being pursued by ground and air muilti-agency security team.

On June 2019, three al Shabaab fighters were killed after they staged an attack at the same police post.
