193 Kenyans living abroad have tested positive for Covid-19 and 30 have died of it so far, Foreign Affairs CS Raychelle Omamo has said.

Omamo said the deaths were recorded in the United States, Italy, Sweden, France and South Africa.

Appearing before Senate’s Ad Hoc Committee on Wednesday, Omamo said 88 are active cases with 78 recoveries.

She said four people are in ICU adding that this is based on the information they are being given.

But she noted that the information the Ministry has is evolving and does not reflect the situation on the ground.

"Ministry has come up with a policy framework to assist Kenyans in the Diaspora. We've had non-monetary interventions including collaboration with governments in overseas to assist students whose education has been put on hold but aren't able to return," she said.

Omamo said that there those whose contracts ran and visas expired and haven't been able to travel back.

"Then those who went to other countries as tourists but unfortunately the airspaces were shut before they could return,' she said.

The CS said the Ministry has also requested for the extension of visas and work permits for some Kenyans.

"The government has also been in talks with governments to provide basic needs for Kenyan students in those jurisdictions," she said.

"Kenyans abroad are not a homogenous group. There are those will long-term contracts and therefore have medical insurance. There are those who have social security in the different countries they live in. Those who reside in compliance with the law."

Kenya on Wednesday recorded 22 new cases of Covid-19, raising the country's total number to 737.

Health CAS Rashid Aman has said this out of the 1,516 samples that were tested in the last 24 hours.

The government has now tested a total of 35, 432 samples.

The CAS announced four more deaths from the disease, three from Nairobi and one from Mombasa.
