A Kisumu-based businessman has warned Siaya residents against peddling rumours and myths about the coronavirus.

Dan Nyibule dismissed claims that the government wants to use the Covid-19 outbreak to settle its debts.

Nyibule said such myths and misconceptions led to the massive death of the region's residents to HIV and Aids.

He challenged Siaya leaders to sensitise residents on the outbreak to ensure that no one dies of the virus because of ignorance.

The businessman spoke in Ugunja on Tuesday while distributing water tanks, face masks and sanitiser to residents.

Nyibule asked residents to observe the Ministry of Health guidelines and not rely on unverified information.

No one should wait for the pandemic to knock on their doors as they might not survive to tell tales. The virus has no cure, he said.

"It's only a mad man who will not see how the whole world has been brought to a standstill to start spreading rumours," Nyibule said.

He took issue with the youths who are going on with their business with no regard to the health guidelines.

"It's regrettable that some of the young people are dancing with death. They only put on masks when they see law enforcers," he said.

Siaya subcounty police boss Justus Kucha warned youths in the boda boda business not to break the coronavirus control rules.

Kucha said some were carrying more than two people on the motorbike and working without putting on masks.

He said riders were not observing social distancing while waiting for customers at their termini.
