NOT OFF THE HOOK YET

Kitui Catholic priest faces charges after recovery

Fr Maanzo has been allowed to self-quarantine for seven days after which police will decide whether to arraign him.

In Summary

• He is likely to be charged for refusing to self-quarantine upon arrival from Ireland on March 23.

• The police asked him to report back to Kitui police station after an additional seven days of quarantine.

The Kitui priest released from the Mbagathi Hospital last Friday after recovering from Covid-19 is likely to be arraigned for exposing other people to the disease.

The police have, however, given Fr Nicholas Maanzo a seven-day grace period to self-quarantine before he faces charges for refusing to self-quarantine upon arrival from Ireland on March 23.

Kitui Central subcounty police commander Abduba Wako said the instructions were that the priest should report back to the Kitui police station after seven days after which a decision will be made.

When the man of the cloth arrived from a one-year study tour of Ireland on March 23, he was instructed to self-quarantine, but a day later, he flouted the instructions and ventured out of his home on the outskirts of Kitui town.

A team of medical staff, backed by security personnel, whisked Fr Maanzo to Mbagathi on March 27 after he developed CaviId-19-like symptoms. Earlier, another group had visited his home during which Kitui Central DCI boss Nzioka Singi reprimanded him for flouting quarantine rules.

At Mbagathi, the priest tested positive for the virus. Although he has recovered, his househelp, who had also contracted Covid-19,  is being treated at Kenyatta University Hospital's isolation centre.

Wako said the decision to be made will revolve around his failure to adhere to the government quarantine guidelines as issued to him during his arrival. A top detective, however, said the priest will have to be charged in court.

The Kitui Catholic priest was among 12 people who were declared as having recovered from the coronavirus last Friday. Immediately he was released from Mbagathi, he reported to the Kitui police station where he filled a form to self-quarantine for seven days.
