A casual labourer at the Maasai Market was arraigned in court on Tuesday for allegedly insulting a trader at the market for wearing a 'tattered' underwear.

David Kigoma Onguyi allegedly said, “Mchafu wewe hauna suruali and kama uko nayo imetoboka. (You are dirty and you have no underwear and even if you have, it is torn.)”

He was charged with creating a disturbance.

It was alleged that last Sunday at the same market he created a disturbance by shouting and calling Irene Mokaya names and threatened to beat her.

Onguyi who was looking down all the time he was being addressed in court denied the charges before Senior Resident Magistrate Muthoni Nzibe.

According to the police report, on December 19, Onguyi took a customer to Mokaya’s stand and she sold some items worth Sh500 and they promised to pay the money later that day.

However, he failed to deliver the money as agreed and when she tried to contact him he was very rude to her.

On January 5 this year, Onguyi went to Mokaya’s stand and for no apparent reason started abusing her that she was dirty.

Police claim that he did all that in the presence of everybody at the busy market which embarrassed the businesswoman.

Mokaya then went and reported the matter at the police station and the accused was arrested and brought to court.

He was released on a Sh 20,000 bond or an alternative sh 10,000 cash bail.

The case will be mentioned on January 21.
