ODM Secretary General

Edward Sifuna on Wednesday declared that the twin by-elections in Embakasi South and Ugenya constituencies are battles pitting "the handshake team" on one hand and the "Tanga tanga team" on the other.

The two polls are slated for April 4.

Former Embakasi South MP

Isharadli Sumra lodged a successful appeal against the winner, Julius Mawathe of Wiper party in the 2017 general election.

The party presented the nomination certificate to Ishrad Sumra to stand in the elections.

It also gave direct nominations to Chris Karan for the Ugenya parliamentary by-election.

The election of Karan was nullified by the Supreme Court following a successful appeal by former area legislator David Ochieng'.

Sifuna alleged that Mawathe of Wiper has aligned his campaigns with the Tanga Tanga team, a term used to refer to the camp associated with DP William Ruto.

"Our candidate is the handshake candidate, theirs is a Tanga Tanga one," he said, adding that they will be "shown dust" in the polls.

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Tuesday asked the Orange party to withdraw its candidate in the Embakasi South poll "in the spirit of the handshake."

But Sifuna dismissed the call, saying that "the party will not advance any favours to people who abandoned our leader during the swearing in one year ago."

Sumra alleged that the former VP was fronting Mawathe because he is his tribesman and urged him to instead withdraw from the race in his favour.

Ford Kenya Party leader Moses Wetangula on Wednesday called on ODM leader Raila Odinga to endorse Mawathe.
