Cops arrest 15 as Kisumu bans Lake Victoria car wash

Fifteen people arrested for washing vehicles along Lake Victoria d will be arraigned today.

The suspects were arrested on Friday when the Kisumu county government carried out its first raid after the ban was announced. The aim is to prevent pollution.

Two vehicles and a tuk-tuk were impounded in Kiboko Bay and Lwangni beaches. Those who were arrested said they were harassed by some youths who arrested them.

Some residents criticised the county for hiring youths to carry out car wash raids. They said the youths roughed up the supects before shoving them inside vehicles.

Policentervened when the suspects turned violent.

Kisumu City Residents Voice Chairman Audi Ogada said that while the move to enforce the ban was good, the decision to use civilians was wrong.

He said that only the police, city askaris and other county enforcement officers are entitled to carry out raids and arrests.
