The body of a middle-aged man has been recovered from the Nairobi River.

This brings to 18 the number of bodies recovered from the river since last year.

The body was recovered on Tuesday in Kware area adjacent to Ngong River, a tributary of the Nairobi River.

It is believed the man may have been murdered elsewhere and his body dumped in the river.

Last week, county Health executive Vesca Kagongo expressed concern about the rising number of bodies, mostly infants recovered from the river.

So far, the bodies of 13 infants and five adults have been retrieved from the river since the clean-up commenced last year.

"This is a very sad situation and our moral as a society has continued to degrade every time a human body is retrieved from the river," Kangogo said.

Ng’arisha Jiji Embakasi South subcounty team leader Abdi Kware found the submerged body and reported at the nearby New Kware Police Station under Police Occurrence Book number 10/19/11/2019/ at 1030hrs.

The team has appealed to police to take action and end frequent cases of bodies being retrieved from Nairobi River and its tributaries.

“We are also traumatised. We need police to move swiftly and come up with full report on frequent dumping of bodies in our rivers,” Abdi said.

In September, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko called on security agencies in Nairobi to conduct a 24-hour surveillance along Nairobi River to curb the increased cases of murder and dumping of bodies.

"The rate at which people are being killed and dumped in the river is alarming. It is important that we give special surveillance to this river," Sonko said.
