Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has threatened to sue Water PS Joseph Wairagu for blocking residents from accessing clean water.

He accused the PS of being instrumental in the failure by the government to connect Murang’a people with water from Ndaka-ini dam. The dam supplies water to Nairobi residents.

In recent years, local leaders have put up a spirited fight to have locals benefit from the dam’s water. The said only 40 per cent of Murang’a residents have access to tap water.

They said the majority of residents continue to fetch water from rivers and other contaminated sources.

The debate was sparked by the Sh 18 billion Northern Collector Tunnel that is 86 per cent complete and is meant to boost water supply to Nairobi.

Residents expressed fears that the tunnel would interfere with the aquifer and cause drought and faulted the government for failing to consider them in the project.
