A Nandi man died after this throat was slit while he slept early Friday morning and his wife was arrested by police.

Jacklyne Chepkemei, 43, a mother of three was held in connection with the murder of Clement Sang.

The killing occurred at Kapkechui village, Baraton, in Chesumei subcounty.

Neighbours said the woman had left their matrimonial home at 2am and slept at a neighbour's house with her three sons. She said she had been beaten by her husband.

The suspect and her husband had argued over her membership in the Repentance and Holiness Church headed by controversial Prophet David Owuor.

In the morning, neighbours discovered the body lying in bed, a kitchen knife by his side.

Villagers armed with crude weapons set upon the woman, accusing her of murdering her husband. She was seriously injured before she was rescued by police.

She was taken to Kapsabet county referral hospital. Her husband's body was taken to the hospital's morgue.

The victim was among thousands of workers of James Finlay’s Tea Company who were retrenched in January this year.

Nandi county police commander Thomas Ngeiywa said Chepkemei is in critical condition. He called her the prime suspect in the murder.

“She is hospitalised under police guard and as soon as she’s out of danger, we will prefer murder charges against her,” Ngeiywa told the Star on the phone.

The suspect had called her mother in-law at 5am to inform her that her son “was very sick”,  lying in bed at home and needed to be taken to hospital.
