A court has directed the DCI to release vehicles belonging to seven men accused of faking President Uhuru Kenyatta’s voice to con a businessman.

Magistrate Francis Andayi issued the directive after the investigating officer indicated they don’t intend to use them as exhibits.  The vehicles were impounded at the time of the accused’s arrest.

Joseph Waswa, Duncan Muchai, Isaac Wajekeche, William Simiyu, David Luganya, Gilbert Kirunja and Anthony Wafula are accused of obtaining Shs 10 million from Akif Hamid Butt by falsely pretending that they were in position to sell to Sameer Africa a piece of land in Milimani area, Nairobi.

The seven allegedly used mobile number 0722208842 and called the chairman of Sammer Africa to facilitate release of the money while mimicking the voice of the President calling from State House.

The offence was allegedly committed on diverse dates between 24 January and February 1 at Prime Bank on Riverside Drive, Nairobi.

Waswa yesterday told the court when he was arrested  in Karen, officers from the Special Crime Prevention Unit took from him Sh30,235.

Through lawyer Cliff Ombetta, the accused said his identification card, club membership card, ATM cards, two iPhones, a Samsung phone and title documents were taken from him.

Waswa and the other accused persons have since filed affidavits detailing what the SCPU took.

But investigating officer Jimmy Mwangi said some of the phones the accused are demanding are still being investigated and will be released.

The case will be mentioned on April 11.
