Detectives probe Kenya Power staff in Sh1 billion fraud case

A Kiambu court has issued a search warrant order allowing police detectives to continue investigating five IT expert staff at Kenya Power over the alleged fraudulent embezzlement of Sh1 billion.

Senior principal magistrate Stella Atambo granted application for search warrant order by investigating officer Juliet Kimwei attached to DCI serious crime unit headquarters to access the premise of the five suspects.

The five are Tonny Kaberia Mwaongera, Samson Githundi Kimani, Angela Njeri Kiama, James Kariuki and Shadrack Kitavi.

Prosecuting senior state counsel Christine Mbevi supported the application by the officer that she is investigating a case of conspiracy to defraud contrary to section 317 of  Penal Code.

The Kenya Power staff are suspected to have embezzled Sh1 billion by manipulating the system.

Mbevi told the court that the five staff mentioned in the affidavit abused their special rights as IT experts of the integrated customer management system of KPLC  to fraudulently embezzle the money.

Kimwei said that the purpose of the search is to recover evidential value relating to her investigations.

The magistrate directed the case to be mentioned after 30 days on April 17, for the purpose of confirming the outcome of the investigations.
