Arrested with another man last week in Juja over a suspected terror attempt, co-accused cleared too but detectives prefer charge of possession of narcotic drugs

In Summary

•Charles Angwenyi and Daniel Mwangi were arrested last Thursday in Juja and charged with suspected terror attempt.

•Angwenyi was confirmed to indeed be a KDF officer based in Garissa and released over no evidence.

A Kiambu court yesterday released a KDF officer after police found no evidence to link him with preparing to engage in terrorism.

Chief magistrate Patricia Gichohi allowed an application by detectives from DCI's office that after detaining Charles Angwenyi for five days, they confirmed that he is actually a Garissa-based Kenya Defence Forces officer.

His co-suspect, Daniel Mwangi, was also cleared after police found no evidence to connect him with terrorism, but the court was told he would be charged with being in possession of narcotic drugs.

They requested the court to be allowed to escort him to Thika court to take a plea.

The magistrate granted the prosecution's request for Mwangi to be escorted to a Thika court to plead to the charge of possession of narcotic drugs.

Angwenyi and Mwangi were arrested at Theta Hotel along Kenyatta Road in Juja subcounty, Kiambu, a week ago.

The magistrate had granted police five working days to continue detaining the suspects to complete investigations.

According to a sworn affidavit by investigating officer Cornelius Arwasa, police,  during the arrest, recovered Angwenyi's  KDF job card and two other cards for the African Union Mission for Somalia,  seven rolls of bhang and a motor vehicle.

Arwasa told the court that the suspects were arrested last Thursday after the hotel manager, John ole Ngosol, became suspicious and informed the police.

The magistrate also released Morris Murimi Warui who had been detained for five working days for allegedly threatening to kill lawyer Geoffrey Chege Kirundi and  Bernard Kiragu Kamau.

The lawyer's life is said to have been threatened if he did not withdraw a court case at Milimani law courts.

It is said that Kamau was shot in the chest as he entered his house in Buru Buru.

Murimi was directed to be reporting to police every Friday until the completion of the probe.
