CAR INMULTIPLE CRIMES

Slain lawyer was in the wrong place-police

In Summary

•The vehicle had been traced to Membley estate in Ruiru two months ago by Manyatta DCI.

•Meme was representing the suspect in the case.

The car used by five men including lawyer Jeremiah Meme who were killed at a petrol station in Juja on Tuesday had been involved in a robbery in Manyatta in Embu county, police sources said yesterday.

The vehicle had been traced to Membley estate in Ruiru two months ago by Manyatta DCI officers during investigations into the robbery.

“They(Embu officers) sought reinforcement from us to make a recovery and they took it. I don't know how the suspect was using the same car again,” said a senior officer in Ruiru who can't be quoted because the incident happened in a different jurisdiction.

“For the lawyer, it could be a clear case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time and with the wrong people,” he added.

Meme was representing the suspect in the case. Police said the deceased five and their sixth accomplice who escaped on foot shooting at them with an AK 47 riffle were on a robbery mission at the Lexi petrol station along the Nairobi-Thika highway.

The cops said they recovered an AK 47 rifle magazine loaded with 15 rounds of 7.62mm calibre, three home-made guns, 6 rounds of ammunition of 9mm calibre and one pocket phone during the alleged foiled robbery.

But the family of the lawyer has disputed the claims that Meme was a robbery suspect. Ipoa spokesman Dennis Oketch yesterday said they dispatched the rapid response team immediately and followed up during the postmortem on Thursday.

“The outcome of our preliminary investigations will inform our next course of action,” he said.

Meme will be buried on Tuesday. Junja DCI chief Ali Samatar was not at his office to shed light on the killing. IPOA is mandated with holding police officers to account for any professional misconduct in execution of their duties. Meme will be buried on Tuesday.
