Uhuru directs police bosses to step up war on bribery

President Uhuru Kenyatta has told the Kenya Police Service to combat the culture of bribery among officers.

He unroadworthy cars remain on the roads because of bribe-taking, resulting in needless loss of lives.

Uhuru said he is deeply concerned about the number of accidents on Kenyan roads.

He spoke on Saturday during Mashujaa Day celebrations at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.

"Because of greed by a few servicemen, more than 50 people were killed at Fort Ternan in Kericho," the President said

The President directed the Ministry of Interior and the police leadership to deal decisively with bribery.

He said it was equally important for passengers and drivers to be more responsive to road safety.

The Head of State applauded the honest and hardworking public servants and police officers.

"There are many of you within the ranks of government who are doing a commendable job. On behalf of the People of Kenya, I thank you for remaining resolute," he said.
