Pius Masai, who is

National Disaster Management Unit boss, has reported that the victims have been assisted with basic needs.

"The [supply of items such as] maize, beans, rice has been going on," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

But Masai raised concerns about people diverting supplies meant for the victims.

He said a vehicle Toyota Station Wagon was found

with 11 sacks of rice weighing 25kgs.

"With information and the help of families and security officers, the vehicle was seized but the suspect escaped. The vehicle was towed to Lang'ata police station for safe custody."

The NDMU deputy director

did not identify the suspect saying it might compromise investigations.

But he added: "We are warning potential thieves to keep off as they will face the law in case they attempt similar actions. We thank families and security personnel for being attentive."

He asked members of the public to cooperate with police so all criminals are arrested.

The camp those rendered homeless were taken to is set for closure and Masai said the victims had been informed.

They will move to temporary structures put up on the same land following donations of mabati.

Among high ranking government officials who visited the scene in Lang'ata estate, Nairobi, was Deputy President William Ruto.

Ruto pledged Sh70 million for the rebuilding of the structures that were razed.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga

donated

1,000 iron sheets, 400 mattresses and 400 blankets.

The Nasa boss

claimed there was a plot to grab the land the structures sat on.

There were claims the fire was started by arsonists in a bid to force residents out so the land is acquired.

Residents said they had received several notices issued by unknown people.

Governor Mike Sonko assured the victims that they will be resettled on the same land and formed a team to look into the land grabbing.
