Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has reinstated his Chief of Staff Peter Mugo, three months after he was suspended over alleged misuse of county funds.

Mugo was suspended on July 30 alongside acting chief finance officer Ekaya Alumasi and acting head of county treasury Stephen Mutua.

Sonko then wrote to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to probe the three officials but little is known of what became of the investigations.

"Those found guilty should face the full force of the law,” Sonko said in a statement then.

However on Tuesday, Sonko reinstated Mugo through a letter signed by deputy county secretary Leboo ole Morintant.

The letter required Mugo to report to work not later than Wednesday.

"It is hereby expected that as part of the county leadership you shall demonstrate professionalism and uphold the principles and values of public service so as to bring dignity to the office that you hold," Morintant said in the letter.

He emphasised the need for Mugo to offer the county government dedicated service in order to promote seamless, diligent and innovative service delivery.

Mugo, a once close confidant of Sonko, was however, reminded that he will still be answerable to his actions while in office despite his suspension being lifted.

"Take note that the lifting of the suspension will not exempt you from appropriate action for any acts of commission and/or omission attributed to you while in your office," Morintant said.

This is not the first time Sonko is reinstating a county official after suspension.

Acting chief finance officer Ekaya Alumasi has previously been suspended twice.

Prior to the July 30 suspension, Almasi had been sent away in February for “revealing confidential” information to a county assembly committee.

He was recalled in May after the MCAs rejected Sonko’s nominee for the position.

On June 5, Sonko suspended Devolution CEC Vesca Kangogo for insubordination after she travelled to the US without his permission.

She was reinstated on July 2 after giving an apology to Sonko, according to sources at City Hall.
