A farmer in Elgeyo Marakwet lost 73 goats after a wild animal attacked his farm on Tuesday at about 2am.

The beast injured seven other goats at Patrick Komen’s Tugen estate farm in Keiyo North.

He said the animal has invaded his farm three times this year and killed a total of 108 goats.

"I heard the goats bleating and when I went out to check, I saw an animal jumping over the fence," Komen said.

"I couldn't believe it when I counted 73 carcasses. I lost five goats in the first incident in May and 30 more during another attack."

Komen said he has lost goats worth Sh800,000.

He said the Kenya Wildlife Service has not compensated him for previous losses.

"I have reported but I'm not certain if I will be paid for the loss. I have not received any communication from the KWS," he said.

Komen said he reinforced the animal shed with wire mesh, but the beast still sneaked in.

Elgeyo Marakwet KWS senior warden John Ngalia said officer visited the farm and laid a trap for the stray animal.

He said compensation for Komen's goats is being processed.

"The farmer has filled the forms. It is a long process, but he will eventually get his money," Ngalia said.
