Moi University has closed its Kericho and Nakuru campuses as part of a cost-saving plan that led to a freeze on hiring.

Vice Chancellor Isaac Kosgey said on Saturday that the restructuring means it will

cut the salary expense and focus on providing the best quality education.

The institution has at least 3,000 workers, including 1,000 casuals, a number that the VC said cannot be increased.

Kosgey said they are also

realigning programmes to focus on the manufacturing, food security and health sectors, in line with President Uhuru Kenyatta's Big Four agenga. The fourth aspect is affordable housing.

“Our aim is to live to our motto and be the university that creates a difference in the lives of Kenyans," the VC said.

"We are working on

rationalisation and improving efficiency. By the end of the year, the university will have saved at least Sh250 million."

The VC, who will be installed at the graduation ceremony on Friday, said the university with more than 47,000 students will support the local manufacture of products for export.

He added that they will focus on teaching and research

and that the university will minimise operations at the Kitale, Mombasa and Odera Akango campuses.

Kosgey further said that the university has stopped replacing employees who retire.

Three campuses within Eldoret town will be placed under one roof for ease of operations and management.

Kosgey will be installed at the ceremony that Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed is expected to attend.

He

has promised to reinvent the university with world class standards and sustain god relations with communities.
