Chief Justice David Maraga wants 2.5 per cent of the budgetary allocation given to the Judiciary.

The CJ once again

hit out at MPs for slashing the institution's

budget to only Sh15.2 billion from the Sh31.2 billion it has requested.

"Surely, the country should know the importance of the Judiciary and allocate us the resources required," said Maraga.

He spoke during the opening of the 2018 Judiciary annual judges colloquium in Mombasa.

He accused MPs of trying to get back at the Judiciary every time a ruling is made against them.

"We cannot continue operating like that," Maraga said.

"Let them start with even 1.5 per cent, somebody somewhere is not serious about what we are doing,"

Maraga said.

The CJ also warned against corruption saying some judicial officers have been rejecting automated payments and insisting on cash instead.

"We have received such complaints. The DCJ has called for a report on that.

We are going to deal with that firmly," he said.

Maraga reiterated that the Judiciary plans to clear cases that are over five years by the end of this year.

He called for alternative forms of disputes resolution including reconciliation, arbitration and mediation.

“Most of the conflict that people are resolved without coming to court and we call upon the judiciary to promote the alternative resolution,” he said.

There are over 111,000 cases pending Kenyans courts that are more than five years old.
