Six KDF soldiers have been injured after their vehicle ran over an IED between Majengo and Bodhei areas, Lamu East.

KDF spokesman Paul Njuguna said two of the officers are in critical condition.

He denied claims that there were casualties.

A relative to one one of the soldiers, however, refuted that there were no deaths.

He told The Star that one their kin died in the explosion and has already been buried.

"We heard a blast at around 8 am. Shortly after, we saw KDF choppers in the air. Security agencies have already been deployed," a local administrator said.

The area is within the Boni Forest where a multi-agency security operation has been ongoing since 2015.

It is also the spot where four women and a baby were killed after a vehicle they were travelling in ran over an IED suspected to have been planted on the road by Al-Shabaab militants in 2015.

On June 7, five GSU officers died after their vehicle ran over an IED in Liboi town.

The officers were on their way from their camp in Liboi during the 8 am incident.

The officers were carrying out normal patrols on the route. Their vehicle rolled several times on impact.
