East Africa Community CS Peter Munya has exuded the confidence operations at the Kenya Ports Authority are improving after the change of top leadership.
The Cabinet Secretary said his ministry has been tasked by President Uhuru Kenyatta to monitor the Mombasa port, being the main of entry point, round the clock.
The former Meru Governor on Tuesday said clearance of containers is course as per the ministry's projections.
He said 11,775 containers were cleared on Monday, surpassing the target by 775 adding that he will ensure the port clears 13,000 containers per day as required.
"The situation is very good looking at the speed which they are evacuating the cargo and exports. The situation is quite good right now," he said.
The CS spoke on the sidelines of the ongoing EAC high-level retreat at Travellers Hotel in Mombasa.
Daniel Manduku took over as the KPA MD following Saturday's resignation of Catherine Mturi-Wairi.
The CS revisited the Mturi issue saying the problem with the port's management forced KPA board to send Mturi on a two-month compulsory leave before she opted to resign.
"There was a problem with the management. People were not able to supervise the operations at the facility," Munya said.
Munya said complaints from Uganda and local transporters prompted the government to act.
He said the Mturi-led management could not properly evaluate works or handle shift supervision to ensure a 24-hour operation.
"We cannot continue to assume we are the only one. There are ports in Tanzania and others that are competing with Mombasa," Munya said.
