West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo has decried a shortage of staff in the county saying the situation has affected education standards.

The Governor said on Monday that

secondary schools have a 65 per cent deficit while the primary schools staffing level stands at 25 per cent.

He spoke during a function at Konyao Secondary School which he attended alongside other leaders from the county.

Lonyangapuo raised fears that the shortage may affect the county's performance in the KCPE and KCSE examinations.

The Governor asked the Teachers Service Commission to deploy more teachers "since the county is in dire need."

"It is better to

have more teachers than classrooms. With the help of trained teachers, pupils can learn under trees and still excel," he said.

He added many were thirsty for education.

"Let the county director of education submit the correct statistics about the shortage so the problem is addressed immediately," he said.

"Our county posted the best results. We will accept to be undermined by lack of a teaching force."

The county boss said his administration set aside Sh60 million for the construction of ECDE centres and dispensaries in North Pokot sub-county.

The early childhood development centres will help reduce the distance learners cover to schools, he said.

"My government wants to ensure children below five years learn near their homes."

Lonyangapuo further said he will establish boarding schools in areas inhabited by pastoralists in order to keep the children in school when their parents migrate.
