Kenyans will pay Sh100 to replace a lost identity card, the Interior ministry announced on Tuesday.
Reuben Kimotho, the Director of National Registration, said the charge will take effect from March 15, 2018.
The charge will not apply to persons who have not been registered before, that is, those attaining 18 years.
KImotho asked sub-county registrars to exercise accountability over the monies.
"Sub-counties managers will be held responsible for any incidents of mishandling the revenue," he warned.
In May 2011, the government introduced a Sh300 fee for replacing a lost national identity card. The replacements was earlier done for free.
Then Immigration minister, the late Otieno Kajwang’, said the fee was to encourage ID holders to be more careful with the document.
However, the fee was not implemented and registration bureaus continued to process duplicate IDs for free.
