"I learnt of the passing on of Yvonne with sadness, given how closely I worked with her husband. She not only demonstrated her selflessness service to the family but further dedicated herself in representing the country," Kibaki said in a statement on Friday.

Of the bereaved he said: "We wish them almighty God’s fortitude as they come to terms with the great loss."

President Uhuru Kenyatta said Yvonne served the country with dedication and commitment.

“The passing of Yvonne has robbed us of a selfless leader who was a role model in her community and in the nation. Hers was servant leadership,” he said.

“As an ambassador, it was always about the interests of Kenya. She served with the distinction the country needed.”

The sister, Stephanie Muite, said. “I’ve been living with her since October last year. She has been receiving medication at Outspan Hospital in Nyeri town.”
