Nairobi county will soon launch garbage skips/containers at ward level, in estates and the central business district.

Distribution will begin soon, governor Mike Sonko said on Tuesday, adding youths will be in charge of the skips in wards and estates.

"As we continue ensuring we have a clean city, we will provide employment for our youths," he said.

At least 40 garbage skips/containers will be distributed in the first phase.

Sonko said waste management in Nairobi will be handled at estate and ward levels.

Ward staff will be in charge of collecting the garbage from the skips and taking it to the official county dumpsites.

A senior communication officer in Sonko’s office noted garbage collection is a responsibility of the county, not residents.

"We will decide where to erect them. Collection will be carried out on a daily basis during morning hours," he said.

Since Monday, huge garbage trucks have been clearing waste from the city's estates and markets including Burma, Muthurwa and City. Other parts that have been cleaned are

Sunken Car Park, Westlands and Makadara.

Since taking office in August last year,

Sonko has been grappling with issues including waste management, water shortages and traffic jams.

The biggest challenge has been that of county staff colluding with cartels to undermine his strategies for a clean capital.

Sonko insists he is determined to ensure quality service delivery to the more than two million Nairobi residents.
