A passenger died on Thursday after jumping from a boda boda as the rider tried to avoid an oncoming matatu.

The incident occurred on

Kabartonjo-Kipsaraman road in Baringo North sub-county

at about 8 pm.

The traveller died at the scene,

said Baringo North OCPD Chemongis Ndiema.

Ndiema said that after evading the matatu, the rider ended up crashing into a rail at a sharp corner in the

Kapken area.

“All the matatu passengers were okay but the boda boda was wrecked. Thank God the rider survived,” said Ndiema.

The rider - Kipruto Kipkemei -

was taken to Baringo County Referral Hospital, where doctors said he sustained head and hand injuries but was stable.

“I was negotiating a sharp corner when I saw a speeding vehicle about to hit us. My client jumped off the boda boda while I was trying to avoid it. I found myself in hospital."

The deceased's family blamed the rider and the owner of the matatu and asked police to speedily arrest them.

“We cannot lose our loved one and simply forget about it. Justice must be served," said his brother Gideon Chelal.

The body was taken to the mortuary at the hospital.

This comes about a week after 13 secondary school students were injured in an accident on Kabarnet-Kabartonjo road.

In an incident three weeks ago, 23 Turkana residents died after the AP lorry they were travelling in overturned at Moinonin near Loruk in Baringo North.

Ndiema warned motorists plying the routes against speeding, especially while negotiating sharp corners, and drunk-driving

He also asked them to be mindful of the poor state of the roads, which have potholes, and warned that those who flout traffic regulations will be punished.
