Fishermen in Bondo and Rarieda want the government to help resolve their wrangles regarding areas of operation.

Calvin Omondi, chairman of

Oyamo Beach Management Unit on Oyamo Island, said fishermen from Kamariga beach in Rarieda sub-county have persistently attacked their grounds.

Omondi added they have illegal fishing gear which they distribute and deny locals access to fishing grounds.

"This is the reason for persistent fights," he told The Star by phone on Friday. "We fear there may be deaths if this is not contained at an early stage."

The chairman cited an attack on Thursday night that forced intervention by police officers. The officers responded to distress calls after the fishermen were attacked from Kamariga.

Omondi said they lost property worth more than Sh450,000.

He pleaded with the Siaya assembly for regulations on managing lake operations.
