Several houses were razed in a fire at Kibera slum in Nairobi on Wednesday morning.

The fire is said to have spread quickly from one of the structures.

A number of tenants were injured while trying to put it out before fire fighters arrived.

Police launched investigations while those left homeless asked for help with reconstruction.

In Tigania East, Meru county, business owners counted their losses after a fire at Kunati market in Thangatha ward.

Traders who spoke to The Star said the fire started at about 3am and that they lost all their property.

They said the fire spread quickly and that it was difficult to extinguish it since the area is crowded.

Resident Elijah Kimathi said a wholesale store with property worth at least Sh3 million, a garage, posho mill and several shops were among property that was destroyed.

"They need aid to start afresh. The fire burnt everything in about 10 business premises."

But Tigania Central deputy commissioner Caroline Nzili said six buildings were destroyed and that the value of property had not been established.

She said investigations would establish the cause of the fire

The victims further noted that poor roads slowed fire fighters.

"They arrived from Maua at about 6am and said they had gotten lost," said Kimathi.
