Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko will on Thursday open the proceedings of the second assembly.

Standing Orders require the governor to open the House within 21 days of MCAs being sworn in.

The 122 MCAs took the oath of office on September 6.

According to majority leader Abdi Guyo, the session will kick off at 2.30pm.

During the address, the governor will outline his agenda for the city for the next year.

“We expect the governor to tell us his plans, policies and agenda and generally what he has in store for Nairobians,” Guyo said.

He said the governor’s speech will likely focus on addressing the problems ‘common’ residents face and seeking the assembly’s cooperation when it comes to passing legislation.

“He will most likely tell us how he wants to reduce the fees Nairobians currently pay, how to create opportunities for the youth and how to improve our roads,” Guyo said.

Minority chief whip and Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok said he expects Sonko to outline how he intends to fulfil the pledges he made during campings. “I expect him to speak about the values he preached at during campaigns. He promised to reduces fees, especially parking. We want him to tell us when he will make amendments to the Finance Act so we can reduce this fee to even Sh100,” he said on the phone.

Ziwani MCA Millicent Mugadi said she expects Sonko to describe how he intends to tackle the garbage and traffic menace. She also expects Sonko to state how he plans to improve revenue collection and deal with the housing shortage.

Residents have grappled with traffic jams, high licence fees, water shortages and inadequate housing.
