1,300 Eldoret bars to be inspected afresh before licensing

More than 1,300 bars and entertainment joints in Eldoret will be inspected afresh before operations resume in January.

"Most of them will be shut down," he said, adding they do not have washrooms.

He spoke in Eldoret

after chairing an inter-agency committee meeting that discussed the licensing of bars in the new year.

Lelei said new permits will only be issued to businesses that follow regulations set by the county and security agencies.

"We will not approve any bar located near learning institutions and those which do not adhere to public health regulations such as having toilets."

Alcoholic Drinks Control Board chairman

Elijah Cherus said they will ensure illicit liquor is not sold at licensed establishments.

Cherus said they will carry out regular inspections and arrest sellers of banned alcohol.

Board director Silas Boit said police and other security agencies will take part in the operation.

Turbo deputy commissioner Gideon Ombongi noted people who import

illicit alcohol from Uganda will be prosecuted.

He asked the public to give authorities any helpful information.
