Jubilee party has slammed IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati for asking to mediate between President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga.

Secretary general Raphael Tuju said if Chebukati is unable to conduct next week's repeat election he should seek the Supreme Court's guidance, not the candidates.

"You are not a mediator, do your work. Go to the Supreme Court and ask for their guidance as candidates have no powers to vary the constitution in any way. This is not about Uhuru or Raila but the country," Tuju said on Thursday.

He made the statement shortly before filing a petition against Raila for contempt of the Supreme Court.

Tuju has accused NASA of stalling preparations for the repeat election and attempting to gain power through anarchy.

More on this:

Tuju said though Raila had written to the commission indicating his intention of withdrawing from the race, he has not supplied the requisite form 24A which is the legal document for a candidate's withdrawal.

He said NASA through their supporters has actively obstructed IEBC from conducting the election process in their strongholds of Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay and Migori actions that are illegal and a violation of the Supreme Court determination.

The IEBC chair said the agency cannot guarantee a credible poll but will conduct it anyway.

Chebukati asked officials adversely mentioned in relation to irregularities in the August 8 general election to step aside.

He also offered to mediate in talks between Uhuru and Raila.

Raila has said there will be no election and has called for countrywide demonstrations on October 26.

International observers have expressed confidence that the IEBC is able to conduct the election.
