KUPPET has accused TSC of unfairly suspending five teachers who boycotted work after being attacked by rowdy students in Marakwet.

John Chesergon, secretary general of the Elgeyo Marakwet branch, asked the commission to reconsider the disciplinary action.

The five teachers of St Augustin Kapyego Secondary School were interdicted but no disciplinary action was taken against the students.

Yusuf Atuoto, Marakwet East director of the

Teachers Service Commission, said they took the decision after talks between the school's board and teachers.

"They sought transfers but their failure to teach has complicated matters," he told journalists last month.

The teachers were reportedly stoned and injured by students at the school. They had also been attacked in July.

Chesergon said the teachers applied to be transferred to other schools for fear of repeat attacks.

He called for disbandment of the school's board, saying it did not handle the problem professionally.

"TSC should know these teachers did not boycott work but only asked to be transferred after the threats to their lives."

Chesergon told TSC to constitute an independent team to investigate the frequent attacks.

"Students who attacked teachers are in school while the teachers were suspended. We want justice for the teachers," the Kuppet boss said.

"The teachers were attacked by students and afterward rejected by the school's BOM and TSC."

But Marakwet East sub-county director of education Kimutai Chirchir dismissed the claims saying five students were suspended.

He said the interdicted teachers did not discharge their duties since July, even after the rowdy students were sent home.

"They did not teach in July and the entire September. TSC had no option but to interdict all teachers except the head teacher."

He defended TSC saying it acted according to the commission's human resource policy.

The education boss said the school has hired BOM teachers to teach and prepare KCSE candidates for this year's exams.

"It is not true for the teachers to claim that there is insecurity in the school," he said.

"The only place we have insecurity challenges is Kerio Valley, which is safe at the moment."

He said some of the suspended students were accused of impregnating two form two girls in the school.
