Two people have been confirmed dead and 15

others injured after a five storey building collapsed at Mwembe, Kisii town near the Kisii-Kilgoris highway.

The number of those trapped is still unknown as rescue operations continue.

County director disaster management officer Julius Tinega said the victims succumbed to injuries at Christamarriane hospital where they were rushed for treatment.

Other victims are admitted at the Kisii Referral Hospital, he added.

"I can confirm that so far two people have succumbed to injuries while 15 are admitted," Tinega said at the scene.

He said the number of those trapped will be known upon completion

of the rescue operation.

Tinega said the rescue operation has however been hampered by lack of equipment.

Only one bulldozer was on site to assist in the rescue hours after the building came down few minutes to 8am on Wednesday.

Tinega said they have consulted the national office in Nairobi for assistance.

Last year, a number of people died after an eight storey building collapsed in Kisii Town.
