Some Kenyans are still using plastic bags just a month after the 'toughest ban in the world' was effected.

NEMA noted the bags are mostly being used by traders in water and juice, whom it asked to find alternative ways of packing their bottles.

Checks at retail outlets including supermarkets found polythene bags still in use, added Jessica Kahura, who is a Naivasha officer of the National Environment Management Authority.

She attributed this to lack of alternative packaging materials, ignorance or illiteracy among consumers, mainly in slums.

"The biggest problem we have with the plastic bags ban is in secondary packaging mainly from traders involved in production of water and juices," she said.

Speaking in her office, Kahura was however optimistic that alternatives will be found in the coming days.

She added: "We are asking consumers not to allow any trader to package their goods in plastic bags as they will be the main suspects once arrested."

The authority has set two plastic bags collection points in Naivasha - Naivas and Tuskys supermarkets.

"We have come to learn there are many plastic bags among residents of Naivasha. We are asking them to drop them at these two collection points."

On the issue of garbage collection, Kahura advised the use of plastic bins or gunny bags.

"The issue of garbage has been raised with our office and we are advising landlords to acquire bins which will be emptied into lorries collecting litter."

Youth leader James Kinyanjui, who is involved in the collection of garbage, told of their misery saying they went to specific homes in the past but that this is no longer the case.

"Some families are disposing garbage by the roadside or outside their houses, making the job challenging."
