Farmers in Marakwet are in panic after the Fall armyworm invaded at least 200 acres in Kerio Valley.
The rapacious armyworm has destroyed maize in Kibiriem, Koibirir, Mokoro and Ketut locations in the Marakwet East side of the valley.
Elgeyo Marakwet Agriculture chief officer Pius Cheserek yesterday said the county government did not anticipate the invasion, since Kerio Valley does not border Uasin Gishu and Trans Nzoia, where the armyworm has destroyed crops since March.
“We are now putting in place measures to curb the spread of the armyworm to neighbouring areas,” he said, urging farmers to diversify crops.
