ODM MPs have accused President Uhuru Kenyatta of bribing voters in the guise of compensating IDPs in Kisii and Nyamira during campaign tours.

Uhuru on Tuesday presented Kisii IDPs a cheque of Sh358 million and pledged another Sh470 million for those who were displaced in Nyamira by the 2007/8 post election violence.

But Opposition MPs led by Opiyo Wandayi (Ugunja) have demanded a comprehensive audit of the compensation scheme, noting the exercise has been marred with discrimination.

"This scheme is shrouded in a lot of mystery and we want to know the amount spent so far, who has been compensated and how much they were given," Wandayi said.

They claimed the Sh50,000 Uhuru is giving each IDP in Kisii and Nyamira counties is little compared to what was given to those in Central Kenya.

Nominated MP Oburu Odinga said Uhuru is committing an electoral offence by giving IDPs cheques during the campaign period.

"We have seen some MPs challenged in court for engaging in election malpractices during campaigns and this may happen to Uhuru," he said.

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma asked the President to desist from using compensation as a campaign tool.

"Some of us lost relatives during the violence and it is painful to see the President, who did not suffer during that period, walking around with a cheque purporting to be compensating some people in this reparation scheme," he said.

"People who were evicted from Central Kenya have not been compensated and we therefore call for a full audit on how much has been spent."

The MP also said the audit should look into those who benefited in terms of region and ethnicity.

"We want to know the manner in which the government intends to compensate the remaining IDPs because this money belongs to taxpayers. We must therefore know where its going to."
