The Malindi High Court on Tuesday for party primaries to May 1.

This followed a petition by Angaza Empowerment Network, an NGO operating in the region.

The organisation moved to court seeking an extension of the party nominations deadline from April 26 to May 7.

The electoral commission noted that the change does not affect other timelines

"Nonetheless, we expect political parties to submit their candidates' names on or before May 10," read a statement by commission chair Wafula Chebukati.

The statement also noted that independent candidates should submit their symbols and intention to vie by May 8.

Chebukati said the commission will appear before the court on Tuesday to raise concerns over the extension.
