IEBC invites party officials for meeting over nominations

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has invited chairpersons and secretary generals of all political parties conducting nominations for a meeting on Sunday.

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said in a statement on Saturday that the enforcement of the electoral code of conduct and the conduct of party primaries will be part of the main agenda.

The meeting will be held at the commission’s headquarters at Anniversary Towers, Nairobi, from 10 am.

“In the meantime, the commission urges all political parties involved in party primaries to do so in a peaceful, transparent and credible manner,” Chebukati said.

The Jubilee party announced on Saturday that fresh nominations will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

This followed the cancellation of nominations that were held on Friday across 21 counties due to massive irregularities, delays and “under preparedness”.

Jubilee nominations on Monday will be held in the counties of Nairobi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Nandi, Kirinyaga and Bomet.

ODM will also hold nominations on Monday in Homabay, Migori, Siaya, Kisumu and Uasin Gishu counties.

The Opposition party will also hold primaries in Nakuru Town West constituency and St. Monica polling station in Kitengela Ward of Kajiado East constituency on Monday.

On Tuesday, Jubilee will hold nominations across 28 counties including Mombasa, Kiambu and Murang’a while ODM will hold primaries in Vihiga, Nairobi, Garissa and Makueni Counties the same day.

The electoral code of conduct which will form part of IEBC’s Sunday meeting outlines the rules that all parties must adhere to during their primaries.
