A Ugandan businessman has been charged with unlawfully accessing Safaricon's protected system.
Ronald Nsele is said to have committed the offence between December 1, 2016 and March 30, 2017.
The prosecution said between January 20 and March 30, an IT expert at Safaricom noticed suspicious attempts to access the firm's networks remotely from one of their staff members' line.
On inquiry, the staff member denied trying to access the system remotely. The matter was reported to a senior manager at the company who investigated the matter.
Audit logs from security monitoring confirmed that several attempts had been made to access the system, and a forensic analysis established that a Safaricom line had been registered by another person who was not a member of staff.
The issue was reported at Parliament police station, after which suspects were traced to Kilimani area and arrested.
Police said Nsale was using the Safaricom line in question. They said they confiscated mobile phone and a laptop among other electronic items, which were handed over the DCI's Cyber Crime Unit for analysis.
Nsele pleaded not guilty and was granted Sh200,000 bond with a similar surety, or a cash bail of the same amount.
The matter will be heard on May 23.
