The government has so far listed 1,200 victims of bandit attacks in Kerio Valley and parts of Baringo who will benefit from Sh100 million compensation.

Sources said President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto will soon visit the region to issue cheques to the victims.

Those listed will be vetted before cash payments are released to victims, including 100 who died 553 who lost livestock, and 543 who are students. The last group is expected to benefit from Sh5 million bursaries.

Elgeyo Marakwet deputy county commissioner Erick Mulevu said listing is ongoing to include victims in all affected counties in the region. The lists are being generated by chiefs in all locations in the region.

These include Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Baringo and parts of Turkana.

“We are speeding up the process so that the programme is rolled out to beneficiaries,” he said on Thursday.

He said there would be strict vetting before the final list is completed and handed to the Office of the President.

“We will profile all the victims and then implement the programme as per government directives,” Mulevu said.

“The government will give out details of how much will be paid out to victims depending on the type of losses,” he added.

Former IG David Kimaiyo, whose property was lost during raids at his home may qualify to be compensated.

DP William Ruto announced the compensation when he visited the region last month following increased killings.

But residents have complained of the delay in releasing the pay to victims.

IG of Police Joseph Boinnet and Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen recently visited some families whose relatives were killed.

Marakwet East MP Bowen Kangogo said leaders are happy with government efforts to help affected families.

But Baringo Senator Gideon Moi asked the state to increase the payout to Sh1 billion, arguing that Sh 100 million is inadequate for many victims affected in the region.

He said the losses have been immense with banditry having taken place in the region for more than 20 years.
