Consumer rights lobby Cofek has warned that over 400 brands of illicit alcohol are being traded in the country.

Stephen Mutoro, Cofek Secretary General, said these are being sold under the name of established brands.

He said unscrupulous dealers are repackaging the said drinks in sachets and bottles of known brewers.

"These are sold to unsuspecting buyers, most of whom live below the poverty line," Mutoro said on Thursday.

The Consumer Federation of Kenya boss said they have received complaints from various distillers on the same.

"These drinks are sold in packets of below 250ml capacity in contravention of the law," he said.

"Some of the dealers sell them in used bottles that already have the KEBS mark of quality," Mutoro added.

He said most of the target consumers cannot distinguish between genuine and fake drinks.

"They are susceptible to suffering health problems as a result of their ignorance," the consumer activist said.

A research conducted by Cofek showed that over 50 per cent of alcohol outlets in the country sell fake brews.

This was found to be common in Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Machakos, and Narok counties.

The illegal trade that accounts for revenue losses amounting to over Sh30 billion annually.

Parts of Nyanza and areas along the Kenya-Uganda border were also found to be among those affected.

"The sad thing about this vice is that it is affecting genuine manufacturers directly," Mutoro said.

"We are investigating 'unfortunate' claims that some genuine manufacturers are part of the illegal trade," he said.

Nacada data indicates that over 14,000 youths died in 2014 under circumstances related to consumption of illicit brews.

In 2015, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a crackdown on illicit brew across the country.
