Red Cross resumes relief operations in Baringo after 3-day halt

Kenya Red Cross on Tuesday resumed its humanitarian operations in Baringo county by holding meetings with state officials and council of elders.

The agency had suspended its work for three days after residents looted food rations and harassed its staff February 24 at Moinin, Loruk.

Secretary General Abbas Gullet said stakeholders, after the consultation meeting in Kabarnet, assured the safety of personnel and resources.

"As a result, the Kenya Red Cross will resume all its humanitarian activities in Baringo with immediate effect," Gullet said in a press statement.

"Part of our immediate task will be to reach out to the and reunite them with their families as well as support households affected by drought," he said.

Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi hailed Red Cross following its decision, saying the humanitarian response remains critical to the affected communities.

Gullet said there are plans to increase the households to 3,000 as well as relocate those affected by clashes, further thanking churches for accommodating the IDPs.

He said three boreholes were rehabilitated in Nginyang, Tangulbei, and Yattya, while six others are being repaired.
