A 10-year-old girl was brutally killed by a rogue lion that had reportedly been terrorising residents of Magarini subcounty in Kilifi county.

The girl is said to have been asleep when the lion invaded their home at 3am on Thursday, mauled her and carried her body to the forest.

Family members tried to pursue the lion but it escaped in the depth of the forest.

The girl's body parts were found five hours later and taken to Malindi hospital mortuary for a postmortem.

Katana Karisa, the deceased's grandfather, said the remains showed that the lions "feasted on" the girl.

"It is sad that lions are left to terrorise homes to a point of killing people and animals. This shows clearly that there is laxity amongst officers," he said.

Area MCA Stanley Kenga said a group of about five lions have been terrorising residents for the past two months.

“We have lost many goats and sheep , and now the lions have turned to human beings this is sad and as leaders we feel KWS does not care about the lives of those living in the area,’’ he told the press.

He said when reached out to, Kenya Wildlife Service officials claimed the area was too far.
