List of 64 suspected witches sparks tension in Kisii

A list containing names of 64 suspected witches caused a stir at Masaba North, Kisii county after it was published on Thursday.

Police dispersed locals who threatened to lynch a woman named among suspected witches troubling residents of Rigoma village.

It was reported that the locals had just come across the list - whose source and motive of publication remains unknown.

Area police boss Phillip Wambugu told the Star on phone that they had to restrain the angry locals from torching the woman's house.

Wambugu said two suspected authors of the list were arrested and statements taken from them.

He said the two will help police in tracing more suspects linked to the authorship of the said list.

"We will ensure that those whose names are in the list are safe," the police poss said, adding that calm has been restored in the area.

He urged residents not to take the law into their hands and instead report any incident to the police for quick action.
