Donkey owners in Wajir county have been directed to carry their donkey faeces in sacks to keep the environment clean.

While recognising the economic contribution donkey owners make to the county, Wajir town administrator Isaack Absi said the town must be kept clean.

"Manage your donkey poop to avoid poop all over the tarmac road creating nuisance," Abdi said.

Abdi issued a notice to donkey-cart operators on May 23 saying they would not be allowed in the town without the collection bag.

There are over 1.8 million donkeys in Kenya.

Around three-quarters are used in transport and farming, playing a key role in Kenya’s agricultural economy.

In February, donkey owners were warned that they would be prosecuted if their animals and litter the tourist town.

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy said the number of donkeys left to wander around on their own is on the increase.

Timamy said his office is working on the final bits of a law that will ensure the owners of the donkeys are arrested and punished.

The governor said loitering donkeys have been littering the town and its environs with their waste.

He said donkeys found wandering around town will be confiscated and kept in a holding centre, which is still under construction, until the owners raise the fines.
